Pop-eye ate spinach…..

19 Oct

I have a growing problem onboard that I must shake – I am becoming way too accustomed to reaching for a treat. But seriously, how can I not, with so much choice?

All of our meals are cooked for us by the chef onboard. Yes, the same chef who cooks for our owner, so we are pretty spoilt really.

But just in case we need a little snack in between meals our crew area is loaded to the brim with options. To say our crew is spoilt with choice is an understatement.

One cupboard has potato chips, corn chips, pretzels, gluten-free pretzels, rice crackers, rice chips, Cheetos, beef jerky, roasted honey nuts, unsalted nuts, smoked nuts, almonds, sesame chips, popcorn, caramel popcorn.

You have your chocolates: Snickers, Milky way, Twix, hazelnut chocolate, Bounty, chocolate m&m’s, almond m&m’s, peanut m&m’s, peanut butter Reese’s pieces and a packet of mini meringues.

In the other cupboard we have about 6 varieties of muesli bars, an assortment of crackers, varying cans of tuna, biscuits and spreads to last a lifetime.

In the fridge there are yoghurts: greek, no fat, full fat, flavoured and plain. There is a selection of ice-cream down in the freezer and chocolate sauces, caramel sauces and sprinkles to make a delicious sundae. Milk is plentiful – we have soy milk, full fat milk, skim milk, almond milk and rice milk. If you would like some cheese, we have a whole cheese drawer in the fridge, filled with the finest selection. Just do up your own cheese board and heck why not go and slap some fig jam and fresh dates on there too?

What drink would you like? We have still water, sparkling water, sparkling water with lime, Sprite, Coke, diet-Coke, ginger beer, V8 vegetable juice, orange juice, Spirulina shakes. Or perhaps you would just like a beer?

Oh – in case we need a treat, sitting on the counter is banana bread, peanut butter cookies and oat cookies the chef has made for us.

You can see my dilemma. When I am at home I simply don’t buy this crap. But, put the food around me, and I find myself reaching way too often for a little moment on the lips sensation.

Self control must become my new best friend or I fear Jenny will gain more business as a result! My new mantra must be more like Pop-eye’s…… a sailor is what she eats after all.

Until next time. Ahoy me maties! X
